Remembering Tabla Maestro Pandit Ananda Gopal Bandopadhyay on His 5th Death Anniversary

Kolkata, May 7, 2026 – The world of Hindustani classical music today paid rich tributes to the legendary tabla accompanist and soloist Pandit Ananda Gopal Bandopadhyay on his 5th death anniversary. The maestro passed away on May 7, 2021, due to COVID-19 complications. He was born on April 28, 1942.

A Stalwart of the Benaras Gharana

Pandit Bandopadhyay was trained in the Benaras Gharana style under his guru, Mahadev Prasad Mishra. His father, Radha Gopal Bandopadhyay, was a noted vocalist, providing him with a rich musical upbringing.

Over his illustrious career, he accompanied several legendary Hindustani classical vocalists and also produced acclaimed solo recordings. His performances took him across the globe, including Boston, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and the World Youth Festival in Berlin.

Accolades and Legacy

• 1965 – Won first prize in the All India Radio music competition and received the President’s Gold Medal.
• 1970 – Honoured with a Gold Medal by the Emperor of Ethiopia, a rare recognition for a foreign musician.
• 2012 – Conferred the Sangeet Ratna Award by the Salt Lake Music Association.

Pandit Bandopadhyay also served as a faculty member at the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata and was a top-rated artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan.
