Legendary Playback Vocalist Padma Bhushan Suman Kalyanpur Passes Away at 89
India’s music fraternity lost one of its most cherished voices as Padma Bhushan Suman Kalyanpur breathed her last on Sunday evening, May 31, 2026, at her residence in Mumbai. She was 89.
The veteran playback singer, born on January 28, 1937, had been suffering from age-related ailments for some time. Her family confirmed that she passed away peacefully.
An Era Ends
Suman Kalyanpur emerged as a leading playback singer in the 1950s and 1960s, alongside legends Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. With her pure classical training and distinctively melodious voice, she recorded thousands of songs in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, and several other languages.

Honours and Legacy

Music critics have often noted her ability to blend classical purity with effortless expressions, making her a favourite among music composers like S.D. Burman, Shankar-Jaikishan, and Kalyanji-Anandji.
