Remembering Dhrupad Legend Ustad Nasir Zahiruddin Dagar on His 32nd Death Anniversary

New Delhi/Kolkata, May 7, 2026 – The world of Hindustani classical music today remembers one of its most revered voices – Ustad Nasir Zahiruddin Dagar – on his 32nd death anniversary. The legendary Dhrupad vocalist passed away on May 7, 1994. He was born on June 19, 1932.

The Elder of the ‘Younger Dagar Brothers’

Ustad Nasir Zahiruddin Dagar was the eldest of the celebrated Younger Dagar Brothers, alongside his sibling Ustad Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar. He belonged to the 19th generation of the illustrious Dagar family, a lineage synonymous with Dhrupad for over 400 years. He was the third son of Sangeet Ratnakar Ustad Nasiruddin Khan.

His training in Dhrupad came under the guidance of his uncles – Ustad Rahimuddin Dagar and Ustad Hussainuddin Dagar – as well as his acclaimed elder brothers Ustad Nasir Moinuddin Dagar and Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar.

Reviving Dhrupad on a Global Stage

Ustad Zahiruddin Dagar, together with his younger brother, founded the Dhrupad Society – a bold initiative to revive and promote Dhrupad worldwide. Thanks to their tireless efforts, the ancient genre not only gained an international audience but also witnessed a steady rise in the number of performers both in India and abroad.

“He was not just a singer but a torchbearer of an unbroken tradition,” note disciples and musicologists.

Awards and Recognition

  • 1991 – Conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his outstanding contribution to Dhrupad.
  • Sahitya Kala Parishad Award (New Delhi)
  • Conducted numerous workshops and masterclasses across Europe, Japan, and India

Ustad Zahiruddin Dagar also trained many students in India and abroad, including his nephew Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar, who continues the family legacy today.
